There was the time my then-boyfriend kneeled before me on the sand and I took off running. It took him a half-mile to catch up. When we both caught our breath, he said, “Ok, ok, don’t worry, I was kidding,” but I couldn’t help but notice the square-shaped, ring-box sized lump in the pocket of his linen pants. We stayed together for a while, but how do you come back from that?
